Very friendly and helpful proprietor, and comfy place to stay - we stayed here one night on the way in, and one night on the way out, from Shirotoko National Park, which is about a 90 minute drive away ( we camped once we were there). You really need to rent a car if you want to get around Abashiri (and to visit the infamous prison museum). Simple but clean and comfy accomoodations. My only regret was that they did not serve breakfast.

Definitely get dinner if you can. It's a long way from the train station so make sure you get them to pick you up and there is nothing to do where the hostel is. Nice view.
