Local Ryokan for Japanese stay with tatami rooms. Affordable and close to bus stop, town centre and 15 min walk to gondola. Woman who runs the place was absolutely lovely

a simple and unassuming place, but the owner, a very friendly and nice lady, gives so much attention to the details that it would put professionally run hotels to shame. all hoteliers have much to learn from her. just some examples: 1. heater is on and slippers placed by the chair in the ski room every morning 2. house slippers lay out at the reception awaiting your arrival (facing you!); heater is already turned on in the room 3. toilet slippers placed facing you as well 4. fresh hot water for drinking is prepared for you every morning

We stayed at the Oyado Uemasa for 8 nights whilst snowboarding in Nozawa Onsen. Staying at this hotel has all of the positives of staying with a family and nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was simple and comfortable, with a futon bed and hot tea making facilities. We slept well, and were warm and cosy. Breakfast was really special every day, and we were provided with delicious freshly cooked food to set us up for a day snowboarding. The Oyado Uemasa were able to arrange lift passes, as well as recommend a ski hire shop. It took about 10 minutes to walk to Nagasaka lift station in the morning, but many cafes and restaurants were just a minute or two away from the hotel. The shared bathroom facilities include an onsen: very welcome after a day on the slopes. We loved our stay here, it felt like a superb combination of Japanese tradition and modern comforts. We highly recommend the Oyado Uemasa for couples, families and single travellers.
